The Computer Information Technology & Networking program includes two courses: IT Essentials taught in the junior year, and CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) taught in the senior year. Both courses have the senior option, meaning either course can be taken separately by students in their senior year.

Course Content

The IT Essentials course is divided into two parts. The first covers core competencies in the latest hardware and software technologies, with emphasis on information security skills, safety and environmental issues, and soft skills. It is aligned with the CompTIA A+ essentials exam.

The second part is hands-on and lab-based, and covers all three CompTIA job environment certification exams: IT Technician, Remote Support Technician, and Bench Technician. Students completing the full course will be prepared to take all exams associated with the new updated CompTIA A+ certification.

The CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) course curriculum emphasizes the use of decision-making and problem-solving techniques to resolve networking issues. CCNA students learn how to install and configure Cisco switches and routers in local and wide-area networks using various protocols, how to provide Level 1 trouble-shooting service, and how to improve network performance and security. The CCNA curriculum provides training in the proper care, maintenance, and use of networking software tools and equipment.

The CISCO curriculum includes the following modules:

CCNA 1 – Networking Basics
CCNA 2 – Routers and Routing Basics
CCNA 3 – Switching Basics and Intermediate Routing
CCNA 4 – WAN Technologies

The CCNA coursework prepares students for CCNA certification, which may be taken as a single comprehensive exam or as two exams.

Career Paths

The IT Essentials and CCNA curriculum will help prepare students for a career path in the following occupations:

IT Technician
Remote Support Technician
Bench Technician
Network Engineer
Testing Engineer
Networking Administrator

For students bound for higher education, this curriculum provides a good foundation to help the student enter the electrical engineering or computer science and management information systems degree programs at both two- and four-year schools.
