Self-Soothing Image Book The goal in this
creation is not to express feelings, but to collect images to
help “self-soothe and create positive sensations” (Cathy
Malchiodi)
Materials: at least ten
sheets of paper, magazines, colored paper, collage
materials, scissors and glue.
Instruct the students
to make a list of sensory experiences that are pleasant for
them.
Look through the magazines for pictures of these items, cut out
as many as they wish to have.
Glue the images to paper, which can be arranged in a composition
or in any manner that is pleasing to them. (Categorization is
sometimes good for abused children.)
Assemble the completed
pages in a binder or report cover.
Write down a few notes
about how you felt looking for the images, which ones are your
favorites and why.
Find your favorite
page in the book. Take some time to look at it and take it all
in. “What do you experience when looking at the picture?”
Add to your book when
you find things you would like to include- this is why binders
and report covers can be helpful to use.
