The Office of Adult Literacy is seeking an experienced, certified ESL teacher. Classes are taught Monday & Wednesday evenings from 6-9 PM in Amsterdam . Teachers are compensated at $21 per hour. [more]

 

English as a Second Language classes begin in September

English as a Second Language classes will be offered this fall through the HFM BOCES Office of Adult Literacy. The focus will be on developing conversation skills, combined with reading and writing skills.

Classes meet 6-9 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Amsterdam beginning September 10, 2008.

Morning classes will be held Monday-Thursday, 9 am-noon, at Centro Civico in Amsterdam beginning Sept. 10, 2008 [more]

 

GED classes to begin soon

The HFM BOCES Adult Literacy program will be accepting new students for its GED preparation programs that begin in September.

Demand has been high for GED classes and seating is limited in each class, so don’t delay in calling the office to reserve your seat. Registration and screening is a two-session event, and you must be able to attend both sessions. [more]

GED tests will be offered at the HFM BOCES Career &Technical Center on the following dates:

Literacy Partnerships

Literacy programs are available through partnerships with the Montgomery County Literacy Project at the Amsterdam Free Library, Gloversville Public Library, Gloversville Enlarged School District, Catholic Charities of Fulton & Montgomery Counties, Lexington Center, Liberty, Trinity Lutheran Church of Amsterdam, Skidmore College, Literacy Volunteers of Fulton County, the FMS Workforce Solutions Centers and Mohawk Valley Library System.

Career Training Opportunities

Students who are enrolled in a GED or ESL program may be eligible for training at reduced or no cost in jobs skills programs such as:

Food Services
Construction
Auto Mechanics
Auto Body Repair
Cosmetology
Equine Sciences
Graphic Communications
Environmental Conservation
Building Services
Diversified Health Occupations
Medical Assisting
Nurse Assisting

These are 10-month programs that run September through June. Adults are considered for enrollment based on availability of seats in the class, literacy and mathematics abilities, career goals, interviews and background screenings.

Adult Basic Education and GED preparation services are readily available throughout the HFM BOCES service delivery area for adults age 21 and older. Individuals age 18 (whose senior class has already graduated) through 20 are welcomed into adult class as space allows.

Youths age 16-18 who are at risk of not graduating and who read at an eighth-grade level are eligible for the Alternative Strand GED program when referred and sponsored by their home school.

These are two night events that provide an overview of the class and include a question and answer session. Participants can complete their registration paperwork while our staff have an opportunity to assess a learner's skills.

Attendees must bring something to write with, paper, a form of identification that shows date of birth and a photocopy of that ID.

GED Fees, Books & Materials
Photo of student working through questions in a GED prep bookGED Preparation and Basic Skill Development classes are free. However, students are responsible for the costs associated with books. The book students use is Complete GED published by McGraw Hill/ Contemporary in September 2001, ISBN# 0-8092-9469-9. The publisher's Web site is www.mhcontemporary.com. Books may also be purchased from local bookstores or another online vendor (used books are available). You will also need a plain calculator and a Casio fx-260 calculator to prepare for the exam. The Casio fx-260 may be borrowed in class, but may not be taken home.
