Photo of two students who attend HFM BOCES Alternative High SchoolThe HFM BOCES Alternative High School Program has been specifically designed to provide an educational option for students from our component school districts in grades 8-12 whose needs are not met by our traditional secondary schools.

The program will assist students in attaining a high school diploma through maintaining the same academic requirements as home schools.

Students are helped and encouraged to make fuller use of the environment for learning by the use of small group direct instruction, individualized achievement contracts and a positive reward system.

In addition, most students will be involved in a scheduled school to work program.

Photo of two staff members at HFM BOCES Alternative High SchoolThe comprehensive educational program at the HFM BOCES Alternative School is founded on the following premises:

All students can learn - Important variables include: teaching, time on task, motivation, participation, practice and learning environment.

All students should learn - Education should prepare students for a successful and productive adult life. Every learning experience provided by this school is offered with the clear understanding that it promotes the growth and development of adolescents into successful, productive adults.

Every adult in the Alternative Education Program has one primary purpose: to have a positive impact on this learning-preparation process.

Program Alternative to School Suspension (PASS)

The PASS program offers a system of dealing with students who come in conflict with school policy. With the inception of this program, students who have difficulty adjusting to normal classroom activities will be referred to the PASS. The instructional program at PASS is intended to develop a high level of self-worth in each student capitalizing on the unique interests and capabilities of each student.
