Technology students win scholarships
New York State Builders Association recognizes seniors pursuing
careers in construction.
Two
seniors from HFM BOCES’ Construction Technology program are
getting extra help with their college expenses. Alicia Brown and
Schuyler Duross were each awarded $1,000 as recipients of the
William Morehouse Scholarship, sponsored by the New York State
Builders Association (NYSBA). They received their scholarships
at a recent awards dinner hosted by NYSBA in Saratoga Springs.
The scholarship is designed to assist students pursuing careers
in construction or a construction-related field. Both students
plan to seek college degrees in Construction Management.
Alicia, a senior at Fonda-Fultonville Central School, plans to
attend the State University of New York at Delhi. According to
her construction teacher Mark Tanner, Alicia is a “good quality
person” that has worked very hard in his classroom. In addition,
she manages two after-school jobs and played softball for Fonda-Fultonville.
In February, Alicia and a classmate tied for first place in a
national student building competition at the International
Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla.
Schuyler Duross, a senior at Johnstown High School, plans to
attend Alfred University in September. Tanner characterized him
as “courteous and polite; an all-around good guy” that is
involved and well respected in his school and among his peers.
Schuyler participated in track and football at Johnstown, and
was selected to speak on behalf of the student body at BOCES’
Annual Awards Program on June 24.
The William Morehouse Scholarship requires applicants to
demonstrate a high level of academic performance coupled with a
mastery of the particular skills of the construction industry.
Extra curricular activities and community involvement are also
considered in the decision. Winners are eligible to reapply each
year during their college program.
“There were only 11 winners throughout the state, said
construction teacher Mark Tanner. “To have two chosen from our
program is significant recognition for our students and HFM
BOCES.” |
