English-language
learners thank Board of Education
for learning opportunities
Six English language learners attended the June 25 HFM BOCES
Board of Education meeting to say thanks and to tell board
members a little bit about themselves.
The six adult learners shared some of their personal
histories --explaining why they want to improve their
abilities to speak English -- while also saying thank you
for the opportunities provided by HFM's English as a Second
Language program.
Program coordinator Laurie Bargstedt did a presentation to
raise awareness about the program, detailing for the board
the collaborative efforts between HFM BOCES, Trinity
Lutheran Church, Todos los Hijos de Dios Lutheran Church,
Centro Civico, Fulton-Montgomery Community College and
Skidmore College, which together bring the programs to life
in the community. Evening programming is offered at Trinity
Lutheran Church, while daytime programming has recently
started at Centro Civico. Fulton-Montgomery Community
College and Todos los Hijos de Dios are instrumental in the
community outreach efforts. Skidmore College professor Dr.
Lenora de la Luna provides assessment services and student
services. Educational instruction is under the direction of
HFM BOCES.
Students enrolled in ESL programming come from many
countries: Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil,
Turkey, Pakistan, India, El Salvador, Columbia, Indonesia,
Dominican Republic, Barbados, Poland, Cuba, Paraguay and
more.
Students who had good attendance and made significant
improvements have been invited to a summer program that will
combine English conversation, reading and writing with
instruction on using the Internet to facilitate life in the
United States.
The class is held in the computer lab at Centro Civico. New
students will be accepted into the ESL program in September.
