HFM BOCES offers GED Exam on Aug. 15 and 16

Examination in the conference center at the HFM BOCES campus.

The GED test assesses a learner's competence in the five core subjects studied in high school: reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics. Candidates are tested on their ability to read and process information, solve problems, and communicate effectively. The exams are created by the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education.

Test takers who have participated in a preparation program should request a testing code from the program.

Individuals who have not participated in a program can determine test readiness by taking a GED practice test. Practice tests may be accessed on the Internet or in GED preparation books.

Students who have a referral form from a preparation program or who can demonstrate readiness through documented practice test scores will receive priority seating. This screening process increases the likelihood that individuals who are test ready are able to participate in the exam. This screening also allows test takers to determine if they are prepared for the exam or if they need additional preparation.

Additional information, eligibility requirements, and necessary documents can be accessed on the New York State Education Department's GED Web site: www.emsc.nysed.gov/ged.

Candidates who pass a GED test receive a high school equivalency diploma that is often regarded as equivalent to a high school diploma. Employers in private industry and government, as well as admissions offices in colleges and universities, accept the GED certificate as they would a traditional high school diploma.

The test sessions begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, and 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Testing sessions last approximately 4 1/2 hours each day. Test takers should arrive no less than 30 minutes prior to start times. Late arrivals will not be admitted.

Applications, additional documentation and documented practice test scores can be mailed to HFM BOCES GED Testing Center, 2755 State Highway 67, Johnstown, NY 12095. All materials should be received no later than Aug. 13.
