Summer
literacy institute equips teachers to guide students to
higher-level thinking
The Literacy across the Content Areas Summer Institute will be
offered August 18-20 at the HFM BOCES Conference Center.
A three-day institute focused on literacy will give middle and
high school teachers in the HFM BOCES region the chance to learn
how to help their students develop high-level thinking and
literacy skills.
Thinking about thinking, or metacognition, is the ability for a
student to “see” the thought process in their own decisions, to
describe how and why decisions are made, and then make changes
that affect the outcome. The increased use of computers in the
classroom requires students to have the ability to use their
knowledge to solve problems. Students need to understand and
master these skills to meet more rigorous academic standards,
and to succeed after graduation.
Participants in the summer institute will explore the theory and
practical ways to actively engage students in their learning,
with emphasis on methods to incorporate reading comprehension
and vocabulary building into everyday instruction in all content
areas.
The Literacy across the Content Areas Summer Institute will be
offered August 18-20 at the HFM BOCES Conference Center. The
institute is co-facilitated by Kathy Nickson, a trainer from the
University at Albany’s Center on English Learning & Achievement
(CELA) and Fran Boyer, a literacy coach at Amsterdam’s Lynch
Literacy Academy.
Each daily session runs from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The $180
per-person registration includes breakfast and boxed lunch each
day.
