Outstanding
adult learners!
HFM adult learners recognized for academic achievement
Lillian
Kruger and Sandra Cobian have a reason to smile. The two
Amsterdam women were named Outstanding Adult Learners
after passing the General Educational Development (GED)
exam. The honor was awarded by the New York Association
of Continuing/Community Education at a dinner recently
at the Century House in Latham.
Ms. Kruger and Ms. Cobian were among fourteen adult
learners from across the state that celebrated at the
dinner in their honor. The following day, the students
attended a legislative breakfast with elected officials
and were recognized on the floor of the New York State
Assembly chamber.
The two women prepared for the series of tests through
HFM BOCES Adult Services classes taught by Amsterdam
residents Frank Mucilli and Lisa Liverio.
Lillian Kruger is employed by Freedom Packaging as a
heat sealer, producing tank liners for large industrial
containers. She appreciates that the GED preparation
program was available to her and other students through
public funds, and hopes the program continues as a way
for people to improve themselves. The program encourages
adults to increase their self-sufficiency and ability to
earn a living wage in the changing workforce. Ms. Kruger
encourages her former classmates to continue their
efforts to reach their own personal goals.
Sandra Cobian works in Environmental Services at Ellis
Hospital’s Bellevue Women’s Care Center in Schenectady.
She encourages other adults who did not complete high
school to make the investment in themselves because she
believes the reward is worthwhile.
The GED exam provides adults who did not complete a
formal high school program the opportunity to
demonstrate they have high school-level academic
knowledge and skills. Adult learners take the exam to
help get better jobs, continue their education, or
fulfill their personal aspirations.
HFM BOCES Adult Services provides several options for
area adults who want to improve their reading, writing
and math skills, as well as prepare for the GED exam.
GED preparation classes are scheduled regularly for
several locations in Amsterdam or Gloversville, as well
as at the HFM BOCES campus in Johnstown. The classes are
intended for adult learners age 21 and older, however
learners age 18-20 may be admitted based on an interview
with the teacher and as space is available.
Five separate tests make up the GED exam. The series of
five tests measure a student’s knowledge in science,
math, social studies, reading, and writing. The exam
includes an essay to determine the student’s ability to
write and communicate effectively.
Many recipients of GED credentials pursue college
degrees and careers in their desired field. Over 98
percent of colleges and universities accept the GED
transcript for admission and 96 percent of employers
accept it for hiring and promotion eligibility. The GED
Testing Service, a program of the American Council on
Education, administers the GED Tests.
Adults interested in preparing for the GED exams through
HFM BOCES may call HFM BOCES Adult Services at 736-4340.
