Alternative High School Open House set for Sept. 24

Collaboration between home, school and community is key to success

Exterior of HFM BOCES Cooperation between school, home, and community is essential for students to learn and develop the responsible attitudes and habits they need to grow into successful, productive adults. An Open House at HFM BOCES’ Alternative High School will seek to energize that process on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 5-7 p.m.

Alternative High School Principal Thomas Flynn encourages parents, students, area teachers and administrators to visit the HFM BOCES campus and learn about the programs and opportunities for area students.

Visitors at the Open House can meet teachers in their classrooms to get an idea of a student’s typical day, and they can also meet with the school counselor, social worker, and administrators.

Mr. Flynn stressed the importance of the event as a chance for parents to gain insight into this comprehensive educational program.

“This is a great chance to get acquainted with our teachers and staff,” Mr. Flynn said. “By working together we can better meet the needs of our students.”

The HFM BOCES Alternative High School Program is specifically designed to provide an educational option for students in grades 8-12 whose needs are not met by traditional secondary schools.

The program helps students earn a high school diploma while maintaining the same academic requirements as their home schools. Students are encouraged to make full use of the learning environment through small-group direct instruction, individualized achievement contracts, and a positive reward system. In many cases, students are involved in a scheduled school-to-work program.

“We have one primary purpose,” Mr. Flynn said. “We are here to positively impact students’ preparation for a successful and productive life.”
