Teachers eligible for free supplies
Online charity matches donors and school projects
Full-time
teachers who could use free supplies for their classroom
projects may want to check out a new online charity.
The online charity DonorsChoose.org (at
www.DonorsChoose.org) matches up donors and school
projects, and since it began in 2000 has resulted in $46
million in donations for a wide variety of school
projects.
How it works: full-time guidance counselors, teachers or
librarians are eligible to submit a project that
requires a donation. (Projects now listed on the Web
site range from needing books to digital cameras or
classroom rugs.) Teachers write a brief proposal, which
is reviewed by DonorsChoose.org. Then the project is
posted and donors can search the site and pledge a cash
donation toward the total project cost. After a project
has received all funding, DonorsChoose.org purchases the
materials and sends them to the educator.
The site encourages educators to submit projects that
cost less than $1,000, and notes that most projects
costing $400 or less are funded within three months of
being posted.
