HFM Board President challenges staff to passion and dedication

HFM BOCES President Robert TownsendWhen HFM BOCES Board President Robert Townsend kicked off the 2009-10 Opening Day program, he encouraged the nearly 400 employees in attendance to focus on the organization’s mission of educational excellence rather than the distractions of an uncertain political landscape for education.

“We look forward to the great things you can offer to the HFM BOCES team and our students.” Mr. Townsend said in welcoming new members to the staff.

He emphasized the need for everyone to remember “what we do each day to enrich and improve each of our students’ lives through education and caring.”

Mr. Townsend went on to share three key goals developed by the Board of Education as focal points for the 2009-10 school year.

Marketing of HFM programs and their successes would be critical for maintaining enrollment and services. Through newsletters, board-to-board meetings with component districts and Fulton Montgomery Community College, and other community-wide efforts, the success stories of BOCES will be told. Mr. Townsend said that it was the people of HFM BOCES however, in their day-to-day interactions with students, parents and the community that are the real testimony to the organization and its reputation.

A second goal for this year would be compliance and control. Mr. Townsend said in the light of several audits over the past year, the opportunity to review and correct policies that govern the organization will lead to compliance with legislative changes and mandates, as well as the ability to fully understand and embrace our fiduciary responsibilities.

The final goal embraced heightened awareness and diligence regarding informational security in a digital world. A new Internet and computer use policy reflects the need to protect the substantial amount of personal and financial information residing in HFM BOCES computers.

Mr. Townsend spoke of the privilege of welcoming the BOCES “family” back to a new and exciting school year, challenging the staff to meet it day by day “with the passion and dedication that is the hallmark of our organization.”
